Obsidian AMI is a software-only advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) offering geared towards
utilities, sub-metering providers and large property managers.
Obsidian AMI was built from the ground up to autonomously gathers smart meter data using a federated
data acquisition network, providing interrogation intervals as small as every one minute or near
real-time if supported by the metering hardware.

Scalable Data Acquisition:
The network architecture for Obsidian is based on TCP/IP, allowing the system to be scaled and globally deployed
via the Internet. Obsidian is comprised of numerous Remote Nodes (RNs), and one Global Node (GN) which services the
entire Obsidian system. The RNs communicate with the meters and transfer data to the GN, where the meter reading data
is processed, stored, and presented on our secure website. Additionally, the RNs can communicate with each other to ensure
that the data is consistent across the entire system.
Using this distributed architecture, the Obsidian network is resilient to catastrophic failure since data is stored
redundantly on the RNs and the GN. Other advantages include automated 24/7 monitoring capability and decreased data
acquisition times since the workload is distributed amongst many servers. As metering points are added to the system,
more RNs can be deployed to ensure that an acceptable quality of service level is maintained and that the network will
always meet or exceed the OEB specifications for successful read transmission.
